Dragon Bridge in Da Nang: What, Where, and When

Dear reader: I visit every place I write about and use only my own original images and videos in my articles. This article contains affiliate links, which I may be compensated for at no extra cost to you. This allows me to continue creating original Vietnam content.

By spending a few days in Da Nang, you’ll have many, many opportunities to see the Dragon Bridge. The head of the Dragon Bridge is in Son Tra, on Da Nang’s beach side. The bridge’s tail is in Hai Chau (Da Nang’s city side).

If you’re planning to spend time near the beach, in the city, and see different attractions in and around Da Nang, you’ll go by the Dragon Bridge several times. I’ve crossed over or walked by the bridge hundreds of times while going about my daily life, living in Da Nang.

🏨 Vanda Hotel (see on Agoda / Booking): a good choice in Da Nang’s city (Hai Chau), directly behind the Dragon Bridge’s tail

🏨 Caro Premium (see on Agoda / Booking): a nice hotel along the riverside in Son Tra, right near the Dragon Bridge’s head

Important to know: other than seeing the fire-breathing show, you don’t need to make “special” plans to see the Dragon Bridge.

I point this out because a lot of people have asked me about including the Dragon Bridge in their Da Nang itineraries. For a daytime visit, this isn’t needed because it’s very central and always accessible. To see the fire-breathing show, you’ll need to be near the dragon’s head by 9 PM on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.

The show is free. You can literally walk over there at 8:50 PM and watch. But it will be crowded. Every show, all three nights, is always packed. Just letting you know now.

Besides the Dragon Bridge, I’ve covered more things to do in Da Nang here, and this guide covers where to stay in Da Nang, with choices in the city or near My Khe Beach.

Where is the Dragon Bridge?

Walking by the Dragon Bridge in Da Nang, Vietnam, at sunset
Walking along the river in Son Tra (the beach side of Da Nang)

There are five bridges connecting Da Nang’s city side to its beach side, and the Dragon Bridge is the middle bridge.

All five bridges have raised sidewalks on both sides so you can walk over the Han River between Da Nang’s two sides. If you’re visiting Da Nang for a few days, you’ll likely cross over the Dragon Bridge several times. This guide covers getting around Da Nang.

If you’re planning to walk along the river (you should), on the city or beach side, you’ll have ample opportunities to see the Dragon Bridge. The riverside areas on both sides of the Han River are nice to check out. The cityside area along Bach Dang Street is more developed, with a lot more places to eat, coffee shops, the Han Market, and more.

At night, the bridge is lit up with multi-colored LED lights (apparently more than 2,500 bulbs).

I frequently do a walking/jogging loop from the beach side to the city side. I’ll cross one bridge, then go up or down the river, then cross back over another. You can use the Grab app to drop you off near the bridge, then walk along the river.

When to Visit the Dragon Bridge

The Dragon Bridge fire show — filmed on a Friday night at 9:03 PM

The fire-breathing and water show happens on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights at around 9 PM. The show lasts for about 15 minutes. The bridge itself gets very crowded. There’ll be lots of people standing in the middle of the street. Tons of people holding up their phones.

On normal (non-show) days, people are usually walking over the bridge, and you may see people stopping from time to time at the bridge’s head for photos. But on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, people will start lingering in the area about one hour before.

I’ve seen the show many times now, and sometimes I forget it’s Friday-Sunday when I’m riding nearby, and I wonder why it’s so busy before suddenly remembering, oh yeah…the Dragon Bridge show.

You don’t need to be on the bridge with the crowds to see the show.

You can watch the show up close by being right on the bridge with the crowds. Or, you can be down along the river on either side, here or here. Some locals set up chairs along the river, where you can buy drinks and relax. These businesses are here every night.

If you stay at a nearby hotel, you can pop over and scope out the area beforehand. See if there are any seats along the river, or venture up onto the bridge itself and hang out until it starts. There isn’t really a “best night” to see the show. It is very busy every time. It’s busy with locals and tourists. So prepare for the crowds and chaos now.

Hotel Choices Near the Dragon Bridge

The Cozy Danang Boutique (in Hai Chau, Da Nang’s city side)

If you want to be within easy walking distance of the Dragon Bridge, you should stay along the Han River on either side. As I said above, the Dragon Bridge has raised sidewalks on both sides. The riverside area in the city has a lot more activity than the riverside area on the beach side.

Either way, it only takes about 10 minutes to walk across the Dragon Bridge.

CITY: If you stay at the Vanda Hotel (see on Agoda / Booking) or the Cozy Danang Boutique (see on Agoda / Booking), you’ll be right behind the Dragon Bridge’s tail. Plus, there are a lot of food options and other things to walk to from here. The Cham Museum is next door. Bach Dang Street, which has the riverside path, is right near these hotels.

BEACH: By beach, I mean the beach side of Da Nang. Along the river here, by the Dragon Bridge’s head, is the Caro Premium Hotel (see on Agoda / Booking). You could walk from this hotel to My Khe Beach in about 30 minutes, directly along Vo Van Kiet Street. Here are the walking directions.

Another positive of this location is that the Vincom Plaza mall is a 15-minute walk north along the riverside.
