I’ve lived in Da Nang for several seasons. There are dry and rainy seasons, with mixed-weather periods in between. If you have trip flexibility, the best time to visit Da Nang is March, April, or May. This is safely after the rainy season but just before the intense heat of June, July, and August.
If you plan on spending time on the beach or swimming at your hotel pool, June, July, and August are still good times to visit. But if the beach and swimming are more of an afterthought, I’d visit in March or April when it’s cooler.

Best Time to Visit Da Nang: March, April, May

What to expect: hot temperatures, rare chance of rain
The best times to visit Da Nang and central Vietnam are March, April, or May. The rainy season sometimes ends in January, but not always. This past year, for example, it was cloudy and occasionally rainy well into February.
March, April, or May are great because the rainy season will have ended, and it’s just before the hottest time of the year. This is the brief window of dry and slightly cooler weather.
March and April are the best of the three, only because May starts to get hot.
Expect temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s°F (28° to 31°C) in March and April. In May, expect temperatures in the high 80s°F and low 90s°F (31° to 33°C). It will begin getting very hot as May rolls into June and July.
March, April, and May are also great for visiting Hoi An. This article covers things to do in Hoi An, and here’s my sample three-day Hoi An itinerary. For hotels and areas in Hoi An, see this article on where to stay. Here’s a private transfer from Da Nang to Hoi An.
Second Best Time to Visit Da Nang: June, July, August

What to expect: hottest temperatures, rare chance of rain
June, July, and August are the second-best times to visit Da Nang and central Vietnam, but it will be hot.
The rain is nearly nonexistent, and the skies are clear and blue. But these three months are typically the year’s hottest months in Da Nang. Remember, this goes for Hue and Hoi An, too. Here’s my article comparing visiting Da Nang and Hoi An.
In June, July, and August, expect temperatures in the mid-to-upper 90s°F (mid-to-upper 30s°C). The temperature decline begins in September.
Worst Time to Visit Da Nang: September to February

What to expect: cooler temperatures, high chance of rain
In my opinion, September through February are the worst times to visit Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue — only because of the rain and often gloomy skies.
September, January, or February aren’t exactly bad times to visit. The rainy season usually starts in September, so planning a trip for this month is risky.
January and February are two months when I’ve never loved the weather in Da Nang. They are cool and dry months, but for whatever reason, I never found the skies to be as clear blue as others. There’s usually a lingering cloudiness in these months. Clear, blue skies are the best way to experience Da Nang.
The four wettest months of the year are September, October, November, and December, with October and November being the two wettest.
Otherwise, this period brings the coolest temperatures of the year.
When the temperature starts to drop in September, expect temperatures in the upper 80s°F (31°C). October will be in the mid-80s°F (29°C), and November will be in the low 80s°F (27°C).
December, January, and February have the lowest temperatures of the year. Temperatures reach the high 70s°F (25°C) and get as low as the high 60s°F (20°C).
There will be days when it rains all day and other days when it’s only a brief shower or not at all. It’s the low season in Da Nang and Hoi An, and hotel prices are also at their cheapest.
Of these months, I would choose January and February. They are the driest and coolest.
When to Visit Da Nang: Conclusion

If you have trip flexibility, March, April, or May are great months. They are dry yet before the boiling heat. If I had to choose just one, I’d pick April. It is well into the dry season and right before the escalating temperature in May.
June, July, and August are very dry but bring intense heat. The heat may be a non-issue if you’re a beach-goer and plan to spend time on My Khe Beach in Da Nang or An Bang Beach in Hoi An.
But if you plan to explore on foot a lot, like in Da Nang’s city or Hoi An’s Old Town, the heat will drain you after an hour or two.
January and February are cooler months with a low chance of rain. I’ve just always found the skies a bit cloudy and dark then. But these months are part of the low season, so you’ll find better deals on flights and hotels in Da Nang and Hoi An.
I wouldn’t purposely plan a Da Nang vacation for October or November (the two wettest months). But if you have to, prepare your poncho.

We are going to Da Nang on Dec 25 to Jan 1, spending New Year there. Do you think it will still be rainy at the end of the year? Is Christmas and New Year Eve celebrated in Da Nang ?
I don’t know if it will rain then. By the end of December, the rainy season in Da Nang is usually over. I’d keep an eye on some weather websites. Yes, they celebrate those holidays in Da Nang.
Hi Anthony. Your website has been a lifesaver! Unfortunately I didn’t find it until today 🙁 and we are already in Thailand with a trip to Vietnam next week. We’re sad to learn that Nov is the wettest and worst month to visit (hubby planned this trip and isn’t much on research). That being said, I would assume that a beachfront hotel is a waste of money? Or would u suggest that we opt for a city center hotel? We will be there 13 days. Maybe we should split it up and do both for the full effect and hope for a break in the clouds? Lol. Also, do you have some good suggestions for the best things to do during rainy season to make the best out of it? We will likely rent a motorbike and buy a couple ponchos and just go for it! :). Is there any place outside of the city that you might recommend visiting and/or even staying at for a few nights that might be worth doing during the rainy season? Just trying to make the best of a wet situation lol. We aren’t party poopers and would like to find fun regardless.
Hey, thanks. We’re right in the swing of rainy season now, and it looks like it’ll be rainy for the next several days at least. Instead of booking 13 days worth of hotels now, maybe just book the first leg or a few days somewhere to get an idea so you’re not locked in somewhere. Convenient hotels right in the city are either the Vanda Hotel or the HAIAN Riverfront Hotel. And if you want to be right near the beach, the TMS Hotel is good. Hard to recommend exactly where you should stay because daily pouring rain limits most activities in Da Nang. If you get a break from the rain, you could ride down to Hoi An and even stay there for a few nights. Most hotels will let you park your scooter rental there no problem. All the other enjoyable things to do in Da Nang are mostly outdoors…Marble Mountains, Monkey Mountain/Lady Buddha, Dragon Bridge, walking along the riverside, beach…Buy those ponchos and just wing it!
Hi! i am visiting week of Jan 13, how is the weather then? 🙂
Cooler weather, probably some gray days. Low chance of rain. Enjoy Da Nang!
is it bad rain in november as we have booked
November is usually the second-worst month as far as rainfall, with October being the worst. There are days when it’s cloudy but not rainy, maybe a random day of sunshine here and there. I’d prepare for some rainy days at least.
how about December? we’re booked to go in Danang on December 16…does it rain all the days of December?
The rain starts getting better in December, but there are still rainy/cloudy days throughout the month. Not nearly as bad as October or November though.
We will come on 17 of December .
Maybe with a little luck it will be ok
It will definitely be cooler in December, so it’s a good time to walk around and explore without the intense heat.
We have no choice but to visit end of June/ early July. Are there ample places (cafes, shops, etc…) to take a break from the heat while exploring the town?
Hey Gillian. It’s still a good time to visit, just hot. Da Nang is a bit spread out, so it will depend where you go exploring. But in general, yes, there are plenty of cafes/restaurants. If you’re going down to visit Hoi An, there are a lot of places in the Old Town to step into to get away from the heat for a bit. If you’re swimmers, that’s good. Plenty of roped-off swimming areas in both cities.
what about nha trang?
Similar timing of rainy/dry season but much more mild in Nha Trang. Not as hot in the summers. September, October, November are the rainiest months (like Da Nang), but much less rain than Da Nang. Overall, much better weather year round in Nha Trang.
so nice of you to get back to me so quickly and I appreciate that very much I am planning to be in da nang, hoi an in March April and May been doing a very quick Visa run and heading to nha trang for June July and August I want to squeeze in a week or two on phu quoc and that would probably be in early April how does this timing sound to you? I really appreciate your insight
March and April are great times to visit Da Nang and Hoi An. It’ll start getting hot in May, but it’s still a good time to visit. Once it gets hot, better to head south where it’s a pinch cooler. Have a nice time, those are some good cities to visit. I like Nha Trang, too. It’s a smaller but nice beach city. You might find it quiet after visiting Da Nang, which is much bigger. Enjoy!
I booked a trip for September 14 to 18. I will just bring an umbrella but I hope the weather in those days are good. I am planning to go to Hoi an, Hue and Bana hills.
You can also buy a poncho from most of the convenience stores. September will be cooler than June, July, and August. But likely be some rain during your four days. Hope not though. Enjoy the trip.
