Da Nang or Nha Trang: Which Beach City is Better to Visit?

Dear reader: I visit every place I write about and use only my own original images and videos in my articles. This article contains affiliate links, which I may be compensated for at no extra cost to you. This allows me to continue creating original Vietnam content.

Da Nang and Nha Trang are two of Vietnam’s more popular beach destinations. Both cities have their own airports with direct connections to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. But Da Nang’s airport has better international connections, plus it’s right in the city.

Da Nang offers a larger variety of activities within the city (and from it in terms of day trips). A Da Nang vacation is more suitable for travelers with mixed interests. Nha Trang’s strongest points are its beaches and islands. It feels a lot more tropical than Da Nang.

🏨 Adamas Boutique (see on Agoda / Booking): I stayed here on my most recent trip to Nha Trang. Very clean, and in a great location near the beach. One of the best cost-to-value hotels I’ve stayed at in Vietnam

🏨 TMS Da Nang Beach (see on Agoda / Booking): Nice hotel, great location, right across the street from My Khe Beach in Da Nang

🎟️ Tours & Activities: This Lady Buddha & Marble Mountains tour in Da Nang or this half-day trip to Ba Ho Waterfall in Nha Trang

Below, I’ll compare visiting Da Nang or Nha Trang, based purely on my personal opinion. I’ve lived in Da Nang for a while and have made trips to Nha Trang. If you’re planning your Vietnam trip, this article details the best times to visit Vietnam. Here’s how to get your SIM card or e-SIM for Vietnam.

FYI: the featured photo above is from Hon Chong in Nha Trang.

Da Nang vs. Nha Trang: Quick Takeaways

✈️ Airports: Da Nang has a very convenient international airport (DAD) that’s located right in the city. It’s generally a very smooth experience at the airport, too. The airport is in Hai Chau, about 10 to 15 minutes from My Khe Beach and most hotels. Nha Trang’s airport, Cam Ranh (CXR), is about 45 minutes south of the main area of Nha Trang. Getting to your hotel is very easy from both airports: download and use the Grab app to book a taxi or pre-book an airport transfer on Klook.

🏞️ Activities: There is a lot more to do in Da Nang compared to Nha Trang. Da Nang itself has many options, but there are also nearby cities like Hoi An and Hue. Nha Trang beats Da Nang for island exploration, snorkeling, etc. Da Nang has Ba Na Hills, and Nha Trang has VinWonders. Both of them have awesome cable car rides. I personally liked the Nha Trang cable car ride over the ocean better.

🏖️ Beaches: For a beach vacation, both Da Nang and Nha Trang are great choices. If that’s your primary focus, and you’re considering both cities, you really can’t go wrong. But I have to say that, even though I live in Da Nang, I find the beaches, ocean water, and overall views of Nha Trang more tropical than in Da Nang.

Not interested in the beach? If the beach is purely an afterthought, not a primary interest, then there are more things to do in Da Nang to keep you occupied than in Nha Trang. There’s a wider variety of activities available to you if you use Da Nang as a base.

👶🏻 Families: There are a lot of expat families and traveling families in both cities. Both cities offer convenience for families. But VinWonders in Nha Trang is a much better experience for families than Ba Na Hills in Da Nang. VinWonders is closer and easier to access from Nha Trang compared to getting to Ba Na Hills from Da Nang. VinWonders also has several themed areas that are more geared toward families, including the water park and animals.

🏨 Hotels: Both Da Nang and Nha Trang have great hotel options. Both cities have numerous hotels near or along their respective beach areas. In Nha Trang, I stayed recently at the Adamas Boutique (see on Agoda / Booking). This was a great hotel (clean and new), only a few minutes from the beach. See where to stay in Da Nang or Nha Trang for first-timers.

📆 Itineraries: If you’re comparing Da Nang and Nha Trang, you’ll want to ask yourself what else you plan on doing in Vietnam. Da Nang is a great base to use to explore elsewhere in Vietnam. Nha Trang would not be a good base to use. If you want to limit your movements and stick to one place, Da Nang offers a lot more in the region. You could easily spend 10 to 14 days in Da Nang (while also exploring Hue and Hoi An). Whereas for Nha Trang, I’d say three or four days would be enough.

Visiting Da Nang

Da Nang’s population is just over 1 million people. And the city is spread out enough that it’s hardly chaotic unless you’re driving during rush hour. But even then, it’s not nearly as bad as Ho Chi Minh City, which gets gridlocked randomly throughout the day.

I’ve lived in Da Nang on and off for years, but as with all articles on this site, I try to remain unbiased and see through the lens of first-time Vietnam travelers.

Da Nang itself offers a lot of activities. My Khe Beach, the Marble Mountains, and Lady Buddha are all easily accessible. About 40 minutes south is Hoi An, with its Old Town and An Bang Beach. About one hour south of Da Nang is My Son Sanctuary. Hoi An Old Town and My Son Sanctuary are two of Vietnam’s nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Ba Na Hills and the famous Golden Bridge are about 45 minutes west of Da Nang’s beach area. Here’s my guide to visiting Ba Na Hills. The easiest way to get here is by using the Grab app to book a taxi. I’d arrive as early as possible before the crowds. It starts getting crowded in the early afternoon.

Most travelers to Da Nang pair it with Hoi An while overlooking Hue, likely because it’s about two hours north of Da Nang. I visited Hue from Da Nang recently, and I really like it. Hue was the capital of Vietnam under the Nguyen dynasty from 1802 to 1945. In addition to the Hue Imperial City, there are several of the royal family tombs to visit. Some of the best ones are Minh Mang, Khai Dinh, and Tu Duc. See more things to do and where to stay in Hue.

Visiting Nha Trang

Riding in the cable car over the ocean in Nha Trang, Vietnam
The VinWonders cable car ride in Nha Trang, Vietnam

Nha Trang’s population is estimated at between 350,000 and 600,000 people. The city itself is also smaller than Da Nang, but Nha Trang’s beachside area is actually very convenient for a trip. There’s a large expat community in Nha Trang, so the area has developed a nice amount of convenience for daily life.

Tran Phu Street runs north-south along the coast and has several great hotels. The InterContinental (see on Agoda / Booking) is one of many nice hotels right across from the beach. Just west (inland a bit) are tons of local conveniences: restaurants, bars, coffee shops, laundromats, convenience stores, scooter rental places, ATMs, and so on. There’s a big Lotte Mart grocery store just off the beach here.

Plus, it’s all pretty walkable. I was in Nha Trang recently and spent a lot of time exploring on foot, plus renting and riding a scooter. If you can ride a scooter, Nha Trang is a great place for it. My rental cost 200.000 VND per day.

The two main beaches are Nha Trang Beach (in the main area on Tran Phu Street) and Hon Chong Beach to the north, along Pham Van Dong Street. Both beaches are popular and suitable for swimming. Similar to Da Nang’s My Khe Beach, Nha Trang’s beachside has a nice path for walking/exercising.

I filmed this video while on a walk along Nha Trang Beach.

As I mentioned in the comparison section above, there aren’t as many things to do in Nha Trang compared to Da Nang, but what is here can easily keep you busy/entertained for a few days. The Long Son Pagoda, Po Nagar Temple, Hon Chong, and the Truong Son Craft Village were interesting things from my recent trip. I also found the history of Alexandre Yersin interesting. He was a Swiss-French bacteriologist who lived in Nha Trang.

Then there’s the islands. If you’re looking to do some snorkeling, boating, or island exploring, Nha Trang is better than Da Nang. Just some of the choices are Hon Tre Island (more on this next), Hon Mieu, Hon Tam, and Hon Mun. Many tours visit these islands. Here’s one. Here’s another.

But by far the biggest highlight is the cable car ride over the ocean to VinWonders and Vinpearl Harbour on Hon Tre Island. I filmed this video on the way back from the island to the mainland.

Unlike Ba Na Hills in Da Nang, you can buy ONLY a 2-way cable car ticket for the cable cars in Nha Trang without needing a full park ticket. By comparison, if you only want to ride the cable car and/or just see the Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills, you still need a full park ticket.

For Nha Trang, the 2-way cable car ticket is 200.000 VND. For the views and experience, this is good value. Plus, the cable car departure point is very easy to access. It’s only about 10 minutes south along Tran Phu Street here. The cable car arrives at Vinpearl Harbour, which itself is free to wander. There’s a new Aquafield Korean spa and sauna complex here (not free).

Then there’s the VinWonders amusement park. The park has several themed areas, a water park, a Ferris wheel, a zipline, animals you can feed, lots of food choices, and so on. If you’re planning to visit this, there’s a 2-way cable car ticket and theme park ticket package.

During my visit to VinWonders, I had some laughs feeding the giraffes in one of the park’s areas. There were a few friendly giraffes around.
